They say age is just a number, but for a vehicle that splits its time between the rugged mountains of Utah and the salty breeze of Southern California, that number usually comes with a lot of "character"—and by character, we mean grit, grime, and sun damage.

Jenna’s 2006 Jeep Wrangler is a legend in its own right. It’s lived the kind of adventurous life most SUVs only see in commercials. However, two decades of memories had started to mask its potential. We recently brought this iconic rig into the shop for a total rejuvenation, and honestly? The results even caught us off guard.

Here is how we took this 20-year-old classic and dialed the clock back.

1. The Pro Interior Deep Dive
Years of trail dust and beach sand don't just "vacuum out." We performed a thorough interior detail to reclaim the cabin.

The Process: We used a combination of high-pressure compressed air to blow out every nook and cranny, followed by intensive steam cleaning to sanitize and lift embedded dirt.
The Finish: We applied a premium UV protectant to all hard surfaces, ensuring the dash and panels stay supple and shielded from the SoCal sun.

2. Level 2 Paint Correction
Black paint is notoriously unforgiving, and twenty years of "automatic car washes" and mountain brush had left it looking more grey than black. We performed a two-step paint correction to level out the surface.

Step One: A heavy cutting compound and aggressive wool polishing pad to remove deep scratches and oxidation.
Step Two: A fine polish with a soft white foam pad to bring out a mirror-like depth and clarity.

3. Restoring the "Black" in Black Trim
Nothing dates a Jeep faster than faded, chalky grey plastic. Instead of using a cheap "dressing" that washes off in the rain, we used specialized ceramic coatings to restore the trim. It’s now back to a deep, factory-fresh black that’s chemically bonded to the plastic for long-term durability.

4. An Engine Bay Worthy of the 101

From "Rock-Washed" to Radiant: Saving a Twilight Purple BMW M240i

When Jesica and Johann pulled up in their "new-to-them" BMW M240i, the color was absolutely stunning—a deep, moody Twilight Purple . The condition of the paint, however? Not so stunning.

As a former BMW Corporate demo car, this thing had seen some abuse. Honestly, it looked like it had been washed with a mixture of rocks and razorblades! Luckily, Jesica is a pro negotiator and got the dealership to foot the bill for the paint correction. Then, she handed me the keys to work some magic.

The Rescue Mission: Correction & Polish

Every great transformation starts with a clean slate. After a deep decontamination wash and a clay bar treatment to pull out the grit, it was time to level the playing field:

The Heavy Lifting: I broke out the Flex 3401 paired with Lake Country wool cutting pads and The Last Cut Plus compound. This is my "old faithful" combo for erasing deep defects and heavy abuse.
The Refinement: Once the scratches were history, I switched to my cordless Flex polisher and a white DRC foam pad. I used P&S Rehab for the final polish—I love this stuff because it’s super responsive to pad selection and wipes off like a dream, meaning zero risk of adding fresh scratches during the final wipe.

Sealed with a Ceramic Kiss

Once that purple paint was looking like a mirror, it was time to make sure it stayed that way. After a careful wipe-down with CCi Coating Prep, it was ready for the protection phase:

Paint & Trim: I applied CCi Revolution ceramic coating to every inch of paint, the black trim, and the lights.
The Glass: No more water spots here! I coated all the windows with CCi Glass.
The Cherry on Top: After an hour of curing, I topped everything off with CCi AMP for that extra "pop" and slickness.

Her paint needed a little extra love to cut through years of swirls and stains from sitting under a tree. I focused on correcting the paint with a two-stage approach:

It might sound unusual, but detailers can offer a unique, trained perspective that can save you money and headaches in the long run.

Detailers don’t just make cars look nice; they specialize in the meticulous examination and preservation of a vehicle's interior and exterior finishes. This trained eye can spot crucial red flags a casual buyer, or even a mechanic might miss:

Why Your Car Should be Polished Before Being Ceramic Coated

"My car is brand new. Does it really need to be polished?

"My car is brand new. Does it really need to be polished? Can't I save a little money and slap a ceramic coating on it and call it good?"

The short answer is yes, you can, but I don't recommend it. It may be counterintuitive, but new cars really should be decontaminated and polished before applying a ceramic coating. Why? There are several crucial reasons...

Factory Imperfections: New cars don't roll off the assembly line with "perfect" paint. During manufacturing, vehicles can acquire:

Dust and Overspray: Tiny bits of dust or paint particles can settle on the clear coat in the factory.
Light Scratches and Swirl Marks: These can occur from robotic arms, wiping during assembly, or even from the protective plastic film applied for transport.
Water Spots or Fallout: Cars sit on open lots waiting to be transported or sold. They are exposed to rain, industrial fallout (tiny metallic particles from train tracks or factories), and other environmental contaminants.

Transportation and Dealership Prep: This is a big one, this is where most of the bigger more visible damage occurs.

Road Grime and Contaminants: During transit from the factory to the dealership, new cars may be on a cargo ship for weeks, travel by rail or travel on an open car hauler (or all three). The car is exposed to a varitey environmental contaminants that adhere to the paint. Not to mention the number of times it's bumped and scuffed while being moved.
Dealership "Detailing": Many dealerships perform a quick wash when they receive the car and another before delivery to you. These "details" are often rushed, use improper washing techniques (dirty wash mitts, automatic car washes), and can actually inflict more swirl marks and scratches. And the longer the car sits on the dealer's lot, the more washes it receives.

Ensure Optimal Bonding and Durability: Your coating is supposed to last for 3-5 years or more. Let's make sure it does!

Cleanliness is Key: Ceramic coatings need a surgically clean surface to bond effectively. Any contaminants on the clear coat (residue, dirt, grease, oils, existing waxes and sealants) prevent the coating from adhering properly. Poor adhesion leads to reduced durability, and a significantly shorter lifespan for the coating.
Smooth Surface: Polishing removes micro-scratches, swirl marks, and other imperfections from the clear coat, creating a perfectly smooth and uniform surface. This allows the ceramic coating to lay down evenly, enhance the gloss and depth of the paint, and maximize its protective qualities. If these imperfections are not removed, the coating will "lock them in."

Maximize Aesthetic Benefits:

True Clarity and Depth: Polishing refines the paint, bringing out its true color, clarity, and gloss. A ceramic coating amplifies this existing shine. If you apply it over a less-than-perfect surface, the "new car" shine won't be as impressive, and the coating's full aesthetic potential won't be realized.

The Proper Coating Prep Process:

Thorough Wash: To remove loose dirt and grime.
Chemical Decontamination (Iron Remover): To chemically dissolve embedded iron particles.
Clay Bar Treatment: To remove bonded contaminants that washing and iron removers can't, leaving the surface smooth to the touch.
Polishing (Paint Correction): This is the crucial step to remove any swirl marks, light scratches, and other defects in the clear coat, creating a perfectly smooth and reflective surface.
Panel Wipe/Surface Prep: A final wipe down with an alcohol-based solution to remove any polishing oils or residues, ensuring the paint is absolutely bare and ready for the ceramic coating to bond properly.

Decontaminating and polishing a new car before it's ceramic coated is about creating the ideal canvas. It ensures the coating adheres as intended, provides maximum protection, and truly enhances the vehicle's appearance for years to come.

"I've heard that if I get my car ceramic coated, I will never have to wax it again and that aside from washing my car, my ceramic coating will be maintenance free. Is this true?" The short answer is no, not exactly. Here's why...

While ceramic coatings offer fantastic protection and make cleaning easier, saying they don't need maintenance is like saying your car never needs washing. Just like anything exposed to the elements, ceramic coatings can accumulate dirt, pollutants, and even light mineral deposits.

Think of a ceramic coating as a high-performance protective layer, not an invisible force field. To ensure it continues to deliver on its promises of gloss, hydrophobicity, and protection against minor scratches and environmental contaminants for its intended lifespan (often years!), some care is required. Neglecting it will lead to a buildup of contaminants that can diminish its effectiveness and prematurely degrade the coating.

Maintaining a ceramic coating properly will ensure it lasts longer and continues to perform its protective and hydrophobic magic. Here are three best practices:

Regular Washing: Wash your car every 1-2 weeks. A hand wash with high quality car care products and towels is good for all cars.
Remove Contaminants: Promptly remove any bird droppings, bug guts, tree sap, bee pollen, etc. These acidic contaminants can etch or damage the ceramic coating if left on the surface too long.
Apply Ceramic Boosters: Also known as SiO2 toppers, these products are designed to be applied every 4-6 months. They enhance and prolong the life of your ceramic coating by replenishing its protective properties.

How to clean your steering wheel

We spend a lot of time focusing on keeping the exterior of our cars clean and shiny, but what about the interior? More specifically, how often do you think about cleaning your steering wheel?

Your steering wheel is a germ magnet. The average steering wheel is six times dirtier than your smartphone screen! That's right, the very surface you grip to control your car is loaded with bacteria.

Where do all these germs come from? Sweaty and dirty hands! Think about all the places your hands go throughout the day? You pump gas, open doors, handle money, and countless other things. Think of all the snacks that have been eaten behind the wheel. And ladies, let’s not forget about the makeup that builds up. All that dirt, grime and germs from your hands eventually end up on your steering wheel.

Not only is a dirty steering wheel gross, but it can also pose a health risk. If you're someone who touches your face a lot (and let's be honest, we all do it!), you're transferring those germs directly to your eyes, nose, and mouth, which can make you sick.

The Professional Fix…

I recommend a thorough interior detail twice a year. Once in the spring after we come out of winter, and again in the fall after we come out of summer. Those are the perfect times to refresh the interior (and exterior) of your car. My meticulous attention to detail guarantees that every nook and cranny, and every surface is pristine. The steam cleaning process effectively removes dirt, grime and even odors, leaving the your car feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

The DIY Approach…

The good news is that cleaning your steering wheel something you can do yourself. Here's what you'll need:

• A couple of microfiber cloths

• Interior cleaner of choice (I recommend Griot’s Garage Interior Cleaner)

• A small bucket of warm water

First, fold your microfiber towel into fourths and spray one side liberally with your interior cleaner. Next, carefully and thoroughly scrub all sides of the steering wheel paying close attention to the stitching and high touch areas. You should see dirt transfer to your microfiber cloth.

Second, dunk your other clean microfiber cloth into the bucket of warm water. Wring it out so it’s wet, but not dripping. Carefully wipe down all sides of the steering wheel to remove any interior cleaner residue.

Third, inspect your work. Look carefully at all the stitching, the front of the steering wheel and the back of the steering wheel. You want to make sure you removed all the dirt and grime. If not, repeat these steps again. Once you've finished cleaning, allow the steering wheel to air dry completely before driving.

Important Tip…

Be sure to avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the steering wheel's material. It’s important to use specific auto detailing interior cleaners as they are engineered to be safe for your car.

Cleaning your steering wheel is an important part of keeping your car clean. But like I mentioned previously, having your interior detailed every six months is a great way to not only keep your steering wheel clean, but all the other surfaces that you come into contact with, such as the door handles, gear shift, and dashboard will be clean too. Keeping your car clean not only helps reduce the spread of germs, but it will be easier to keep clean, it will look better, and it will retain its resale value better.

So next time you're getting ready to hit the road, take a few minutes to clean your steering wheel. It's a simple step that can make a big difference!

You are looking at a chemical iron remover doing what it does best. Iron removers have the extraordinary ability to dissolve and remove iron contaminants that have bonded with your car’s paint like a clingy ex-lover, but it comes at a cost.. They stink!

Even though they smell bad, iron removers work their magic by reacting with iron oxide, commonly known as rust, which is gets embedded in the clear coat of your car’s paint.
